COACH'S CORNER
Hey Hurricanes, Coach Will here!
Thank you guys so much for an awesome last home meet! I know it wasn’t ideal with the weather, and having to go to Westwood in the morning, but we made it work.
We had many best times last night and even more people qualified for Champs. This year, we had over 70 swimmers qualify for Champs which is over half of our team! That really says a lot about the quality of swimmers we have on this team. I also loved seeing the sportsmanship we showed after each race, shaking hands with the other team.
Also, thank you everyone for a very memorable senior night. I really appreciate all the support and kind words. I have loved swimming and being a coach on this team and look forward to coaching again next summer!
Keep up the good work and Go Hurricanes!!
Sincerely,
Coach Will
_______
Heyo!
What an exciting way to end the regular season! The energy was insane! The parent-coach relays took down Westwood’s, which was the best way to kick off the meet? Before that event started, I looked around and saw barely anyone in their seat huddled around the pool. In all of my years of being a hurricane, that was my proudest moment. From there on, the energy carried and it was awesome to watch you all cheer on your teammates. Even this morning our few swimmers that came to finish their races swam and cheered with everything we got!
This meet showed me how lucky I am to be a Hurricane!

COACH'S CORNER
Hurricanes,
What a joy it was to share our last regular season meet together of the 2021 season. The past year and a half has been challenging. Last summer was far from the normal, energetic summer swim season we know and love. This year, it was so wonderful to feel like we are back, swimming and enjoying our summer together.
It has been so wonderful for the coaches to see the immense growth and dedication of our swimmers this summer. It is truly a team effort that has facilitated the success we have seen in the pool week after week.
Now, as the season draws to a close, I look forward to celebrating all of our team's successes at fun practice today and our banquet on Wednesday. We have earned some fun, relaxation, and celebration after many weeks of hard work.
Finally, I know I will be saying it many more times over the coming days and weeks, but THANK YOU! It has been an incredible honor to coach this fantastic team for the past six years. I will forever appreciate the memories of these wonderful years coaching at Hermitage.
As I have said many times before, well done, Hurricanes!
~Coach Philip

Sutton Gow - Sutton pushed through some unusually chilly and long waits for her swims to then have some really strong races. It can be hard when you are waiting around and worried about your events, but Sutton pushed through and enjoyed the strong sense of accomplishment that comes from knowing that you gave your best in your race. Sutton's mindset and ability to push through contributed both to her own success and that of the team. Well done, Sutton!
Harrison Winston - Harrison has shown great growth this season. His energy in practice is really fantastic and he has a strong desire to do more and improve each day. Last night, Harrison was swimming very near his best time of the season for backstroke (a stroke he didn't even want to swim at the beginning of the season!). It's always great to have young, energetic, and excited swimmers in our youngest age group who are ready to grow and improve as swimmers. Keep up the great work, Harrison!

COACH'S CORNER
Awesome job last night, Hurricanes!
We had another incredible win and I could not have imagined a better last home meet. I was so proud watching everybody attack the breaststroke and improve so drastically from just 3 weeks ago. We appreciate each and every person that shows up to the meets and contributes to the team, both as point scorers and with team spirit.
As I look back on these past 9 years as a Hurricane, I can see how truly blessed I am to have been a part of such an incredible community (I promise I’m not leaving, only done competing). All of you remind me every summer why I love this sport, and I can say with 100% certainty that I would not still be swimming if it was not for Hermitage.
That being said, stick with it! This team has grown so much since I first started here, and watching kids keep coming back every summer brings all of the coaches more joy than we can express. Lean into this team and all that it provides and I promise you will find that there is no better way to spend your Monday nights! I look forward to watching many, many more senior send-offs in the future.
Now let’s get ready for our last regular season meet and begin looking forward to Champs! Keep showing up, keep working hard, and thank you for the best summer swimming experience I could’ve ever asked for.

COACH'S CORNER
Dear Hurricanes,
Congratulations on another impressive meet! It was great to see some newer swimmers stepping into relays and events they may not usually swim. Our success is a testament to the depth of talent on our team. It takes all swimmers to be successful. Having so many swimmers we can rely on to bring their skills and talents to contribute to our team is what it is all about!
I am continually amazed by the team spirit and energy that is present on deck. This speaks volumes about our growth as a team! Seeing people hanging out, cheering on friends, and having a good time - this is what summer swimming is about and what makes it so fun!
As we prepare to head into our last two regular season meets, all I can say is "WOW!" and "Keep up the good work!". We have 81 swimmers who have qualified for the JRAC Championship Meet (56% of the team!). We have swimmers continuing to drop time and improve their performance. We have records yet to be broken. We have senior swimmers we will continue to recognize and celebrate. Let's continue to have a great time and earn the successes that this team deserves! We have worked hard and the hard work is paying off.
Go Hurricanes!
~Coach Philip
HURRICANES OF THE WEEK
Kaitlin Rennie - Kaitlin is new to the Hermitage Hurricanes this year, but she certainly isn't letting her inexperience show! Kaitlin has been dedicated to working hard in practice and has quickly earned two Champs qualifying times. Last night, she had three strong individual performances, winning each of her events. To finish off the evening, Kaitlin stepped up to swim an incredibly strong "anchor" leg (final swimmer) on her relay team, bringing her grand total of events won to four and earning the designation of a Quadruple Winner for the meet. We know that we have only begun to see what Kaitlin is capable of. Well done, Kaitlin!
Cooper Bell - Cooper is one of our most consistently hard-working swimmers. At practice, Cooper takes feedback from the coaches as opportunities for growth and improvement. Last night, Cooper stepped up for some events in which he does not typically swim. Despite some apprehension and nervousness, Cooper never complained. He checked in with the coaches to ensure he was prepared and performed extremely well. He won 1st and 2nd in these two events and these points earned helped contribute to the team's overall success. Keep up the good work, Cooper!

COACH'S CORNER
Hey Hurricanes!
Last night was one of the closest swim meets in which I have ever taken part. It was neck and neck the whole meet, but unfortunately Glen Allen edged us out.
HOWEVER, a close loss is nothing to be ashamed about. Coach Philip, Coach Anderson, and I saw many great races. We competed evenly with a team with at least 30 more swimmers on their roster than us, which says a lot about our team! I couldn’t be more proud of how hard and fast everyone swam! As we always remind you, every swim counts, whether you are scoring 1st place, 6th place, or just competing. Our team is at our best when we are all showing up, swimming our events, and doing our best!
Next week, we take on Sandston at home for our fourth meet. Let’s make sure we keep working really hard in practice so that we can show Sandston what the Hermitage Hurricanes are capable of!
Go Hurricanes!!!

HURRICANES OF THE WEEK
Sallie Martin - Sallie has been working hard and had a truly fantastic meet! She won all three of her individual events and was a critical part of her relay's first place finish. Not only did this relay win, but Sallie and her team set a new team record, beating the previous record by 6 seconds. Not only did Sallie have a wonderful evening of swims, but Sallie is a consistent favorite on deck, usually being followed by a gaggle of admirers, whom she patiently entertains. Sallie continues to set a strong example for our team. Terrific job, Sallie!
Charlie Harrington - Charlie is consistently a top performer for our team. He works hard as a swimmer at NOVA and his diligent practice there contributes to our success at Hermitage. It's not everyday that a swimmer swims three record-setting times in a regular season meet. Last night, Charlie broke two records and tied another! This energy and enthusiasm continued as he cheered on his teammates throughout the meet. This all continues to push our team to greater heights. Well done, Charlie!

COACH'S CORNER
Dearest Hurricanes!
WE'RE BACK!! This past year or so have been incredibly challenging. What a glorious moment it was to feel a return to normalcy and a bit of the light at the end of the tunnel.
As I begin my 6th season as the head coach of the Hermitage Hurricanes, I am amazed by the growth, talent, sportsmanship, and determination that was demonstrated in the pool yesterday. It is so incredible to get to work with dedicated swimmers who want to be their best selves in the pool.
Congratulations on a winning meet to begin our season! There is nothing better than that first victory to really show the other teams that Hermitage is ready to do some great things this season.
As always, I am your incredibly proud coach. Let's continue to work hard at practices and in our meets to show all of our competitors how great it is to be a Hermitage Hurricane and that we are ready to win!
Go Hurricanes!
~Coach Philip
HURRICANES OF THE WEEK
Joey Gardner - As a new Hermitage Hurricane, Joey has come out of the gates as a strong and mighty competitor. She has been working hard these first few weeks of practice and was excited to swim each of her races. The hard work and determination showed as she was both a triple winner and a three-time Champs qualifier. Well done, Joey!
Owen Smith - After a few years on the team, Owen is still a dedicated swimmer in practice and ready for new challenges at our meets. He won 1st in his 100 IM and earned his Champs qualifying time in the 50FR. Despite being upset by a DQ in his 50BR, Owen was already eager to learn from his mistake and to improve his strokes for next week (it's a Breaststroke week in JRAC, so he should have a chance to take another whack at it!). Keep up the good work, Owen!

COACH'S CORNER
Dear Hurricanes,
I am so proud of how you all have swam these past two swim meets! Both the Black Team and Red Team had so many stellar swims and HUGE time improvements. All the hard work you all have been putting in during practice has really paid off! Even though this season was very different than our other normal seasons, you all have brought so much enthusiasm and spirit to every practice and have made my job as a coach so much fun this season.
I am writing the Coach’s Corner this week to let you all know that this is my last season as a coach for the Hermitage Hurricanes. I wish I could stay for longer but I have a wonderful opportunity to work with KPMG as an audit intern next summer in Richmond. I started swimming with the Hurricanes in the summer of 2008 and continued until my senior year in 2018. Summer swim team was always the highlight of my summer. I absolutely loved the team and gained so much more confidence in my swimming while also making life long friendships with other swimmers. The past three summers I have had the pleasure of being an Assistant Coach working with Coach Philip, Coach Lillian, and Coach Anderson. I had always wanted to be a coach, ever since I started swimming, and I’m so thankful that I had the opportunity to do so. I have loved every minute of it! You all have made my experience as a coach so much better than I ever could have imagined, which is what makes saying goodbye so hard. Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to share my love for swimming with you all, just like my coaches did for me all my years as a swimmer. You all have made such a huge impact on my life.
I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your summer and I am looking forward to hearing about how fast you all swim next summer! I’ll miss you all so much!
As always, Go Hurricanes!
Coach Ashley
